Primary dance festival brings twelve BCP schools together

More than 120 pupils from twelve schools across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole performed on stage at the Ocean Theatre for a new Primary Dance Festival.

The event, created in partnership with Bournemouth School Games, brought together Year three and four children over two days to share original routines inspired by the theme Once Upon a Dance. Performances were based on well known storybooks and fairytales and were presented to fellow pupils, teachers and families.

Many of the children were visiting and performing in a theatre for the first time. Teachers said pupils grew in confidence and were proud to appear on a professional stage, while also developing teamwork, resilience and a sense of achievement through rehearsals and shared goals. One teacher from Bethany Juniors said weekly sessions allowed one child to shine and build confidence in school.

Organisers confirmed the festival will return next year with the theme Back in Time, chosen by the children. The event aims to give young people across BCP the chance to take part in dance and choreography at a time when some schools are reducing arts opportunities.
