Winton 20mph to be implemented

A new 20mph speed limit is set to be introduced on 139 roads across Bournemouth, starting with Winton and surrounding areas including Charminster, Moordown and Talbot Woods.

BCP Council has identified Winton as the highest priority area for a 20mph neighbourhood scheme after 217 were injured in crashes between 2019 and 2023, including 36 who suffered serious injuries.

The council says the scheme will improve safety for all road users, help reduce congestion and support better air quality. Public engagement took place from March to April 2025, including a questionnaire, interviews with residents and information sessions at Winton Library.

During the formal Traffic Regulation Order consultation, 209 responses were received. 96 supported the plans, 105 objected and 8 made general comments. Morebus backed the proposals and suggested further improvements linked to the Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Winton East ward Councillor Simon Bull said most residents he had spoken to were in favour and described it as a positive step. Moordown ward Councillor Kate Salmon said slower speeds are safer for everyone and welcomed the reduction in rat running.

The plans will be discussed at a transport advisory group meeting on February 25th before going to BCP Council’s cabinet next month.
