Improvement work starts on town centre roads

Major improvements have begun on key Bournemouth town centre roads to boost bus services locally.

Work on Westover Road and Old Christchurch Road is now under way as part of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, with plans to widen pavements, redesign pedestrian islands and upgrade bus stop facilities to improve reliability and accessibility.

Once complete, buses will travel in both directions along Old Christchurch Road, with a new westbound stop and shelter opposite Lorne Park Road providing better access for nearby residents, alongside seating, real time information and CCTV.

The scheme includes resurfacing, drainage upgrades, kerb reshaping and junction changes to shorten crossing distances, while a widened pavement outside O’Neill’s will allow buses to stop directly at the kerb and help reduce delays linked to illegal parking.

A full closure will be in place from 5 May to 15 May 2026 between Lansdowne Roundabout and just east of the Wooton Mount junction, with further resurfacing until 22 May and additional activity at Gervis Place in early May.

Councillor Andy Hadley said the investment would make the centre “safer, more accessible and easier to move around”, adding it would help buses run more smoothly and cut delays.

Pedestrian access will remain on at least one side, with signed diversions and temporary bus stop changes communicated in advance.
