Garden cottages reopen at Highcliff
Historic coastguard cottages overlooking Bournemouth’s seafront have reopened following a major refurbishment.
Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel has completed the renovation of its nineteenth century Garden Cottages, creating nineteen redesigned rooms across five restored buildings that now offer sea views, updated interiors and access to the hotel’s restaurant, bar and outdoor pool.
Set close to the clifftop path, the cottages retain original architectural features including sloping ceilings and period details, while newly introduced design elements by Joanna Knight Interiors bring sandy tones, coastguard red accents, bespoke artwork and locally inspired touches to each individually laid out room.
The buildings were first constructed as coastguard homes before becoming private residences and later forming part of the hotel in 1925, with their history reflected through curated artwork by Spires Art featuring archival maps, images and written accounts of the site’s development.
General Manager Michael Regenhardt said the renovation has preserved the cottages’ character while creating inviting spaces where guests can experience the coastline in a more private setting, and the project follows a wider refurbishment of the hotel’s one hundred and sixty seven guestrooms and leisure areas completed in 2024.
