Waste strategy approved by council

A new waste management strategy for Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole has been approved by full council, setting out plans to reduce rubbish and increase recycling over the next ten years.

The strategy, covering 2026-2030, aims to cut the amount of waste produced, improve recycling rates and review collection services across the area. Measures include prioritising reuse and recycling initiatives, diverting more waste from landfill and banning recyclable items from black bins.

Councillors also agreed to end kerbside battery collections to reduce the risk of fires. Since January 2025, eleven fires linked to incorrect battery disposal have been recorded in vehicles and transfer stations. Councillor Andy Hadley said batteries placed in household bins or recycling trucks are causing a growing number of fires and pose an unacceptable danger.

Instead, residents will be asked to use battery drop off points in shops or take them to designated recycling centres. During the debate, some councillors raised concerns about incineration and the frequency of rubbish collections, but three separate votes to note the consultation, adopt the strategy and remove the battery service were all approved.
