Social care savings plan reviewed by councillors

Savings of £3.1M are planned across social care, housing and public health services in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole next year.

Members of BCP Council’s overview and scrutiny board reviewed the proposed budget for 2026 and 2027 before it goes to cabinet and full council, focusing on how the changes could affect residents across the area.

The wellbeing directorate, which includes housing and public protection, public health and adult social care, is expected to deliver ten new savings. These include increased income from the NHS, changes within environmental protection and service charges for sheltered temporary accommodation.

Laura Ambler, corporate director for wellbeing, said there are no direct reductions to current service provision but warned of increasing demand in adult social care creating in year budget pressures. She said the focus is on maintaining service delivery and quality.

Councillors raised questions about client contributions and the future of non statutory services. Directors confirmed additional contributions relate to more people qualifying to pay, not higher charges, and statutory services will continue. Members supported the recommendations and called for clearer wording in next year’s budget consultation.
