Christmas Day sea dip returns to Boscombe

Places are still available for Bournemouth’s Christmas Day sea dip, which will take place at a new location in Boscombe following a safety review.

The annual White Christmas Dip will now be held to the east of Boscombe Pier, between the Neptune and Urban Reef areas, while still starting at 10.30 in the morning on December 25th, with organisers confirming the change is aimed at improving pedestrian safety.

Hundreds of people, many wearing fancy dress, are expected to take part in the event, which raises money for Macmillan Caring Locally, the charity supporting the Macmillan Unit hospice at Christchurch Hospital.

The dip began in 2008 and has taken place every year apart from one during the pandemic, raising three hundred and sixty five thousand pounds for the charity since it started.

Organiser Barry Wilson said the move was necessary because of the growing size of the event, adding that the new area has no vehicle access and offers a safer environment without changing the character of the day.

He said, “This won’t detract from the event in any way. The Dip has become an institution for many local families and groups of friends.”

Online registration remains open but will close at midday on Wednesday, with organisers urging anyone planning to take part to sign up soon.
