A man in his seventies is in hospital in a life-threatening condition after a collision involving a bus in Christchurch.

Dorset Police were called at 8.43am on Wednesday 3 December 2025 to reports of the incident in Somerford Road. Officers said the pedestrian sustained very serious injuries and was taken to hospital. His family has been informed.

A thirty-six-year-old man from Poole has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences as enquiries continue. Road closures were put in place to allow emergency services to respond.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an air ambulance, and an operations officer to the scene.

“We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.”

Police Constable Craig Jeffery from the Roads Policing Team said an investigation is underway and urged anyone who witnessed the collision to contact the force. He asked drivers who were travelling along Somerford Road at the time to review any dashcam footage that could help the enquiry.

He added that officers understood the closure took place during a busy part of the morning but said it was necessary to safely treat the injured man and carry out a full investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police, quoting occurrence number 55250177675.
