Runners raise funds for Diverse Abilities charity

A wave of community spirit swept across Bournemouth seafront as local runners took part in Run Bournemouth to mark the 70th anniversary of Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity.

The group, known as #TeamDA, ran in celebration of the milestone while raising money and awareness for children and adults living with physical and learning disabilities across the county.

From experienced runners to first-time participants, all shared the goal of supporting the charity’s ongoing work.

The event formed part of the charity’s “70 Runners for 70 Years” initiative, honouring its founding in 1955 by Phyllis Edwards and a group of parents determined to improve local support for disabled children. Today, Diverse Abilities provides vital services including Langside School, respite care, supported living and family support.

Francesca Potton, Community Fundraiser at Diverse Abilities, said the runners’ efforts were an inspiring way to celebrate the anniversary, adding that every mile and every pound raised makes a difference to local families.

The charity is encouraging anyone inspired by the event to take part in future challenges or create their own to help sustain its work for another 70 years.
