A major firefighting operation took place this afternoon (Sunday 24 August) after crews were called to reports of a grass fire off Alder Road in Poole.
The alarm was raised at 2.46pm, with firefighters from Poole station first on scene before reinforcements arrived.
In total, fifteen fire engines – around seventy-five firefighters – have been deployed.
Crews attended from Poole, Hamworthy, Westbourne, Springbourne, Redhill Park, Wimborne, Weymouth, Sturminster Newton, Ferndown, Shaftesbury and Mere, with additional support from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Specialist vehicles were also sent, including the Unimog from Wareham, landrovers from Christchurch and Bere Regis, and a Water Carrier. These units are designed for difficult terrain and for carrying large amounts of water to tackle rural fires.
The fire involved grass and trees, and firefighters worked to prevent further spread and to protect neighbouring properties. Local residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed to reduce the impact of smoke.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way with Dorset Police supporting the fire service.
