Fire crews tackle deliberate blaze on Bournemouth heathland
Firefighters were called to Turbary Park Avenue in Bournemouth at 7.27pm today following reports of a fire on nearby heathland.
Crews from Redhill Park, Springbourne, Poole, Ferndown, Christchurch, Hamworthy and Wareham responded to the blaze, along with a water carrier from Ringwood in Hampshire.
In total, eight appliances and specialist units were sent to the scene.
On arrival, they found an area of approximately 150 by 50 metres on fire.
Firefighters used hose reel jets, main lines and beaters to bring the flames under control. The stop message was received at 8.49pm, although crews remain at the site to dampen down and prevent flare-ups.
A re-inspection is planned later tonight to ensure the area remains safe.
The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate. Dorset Police are now leading the investigation.
Turbary Park Avenue was closed to traffic while emergency services dealt with the incident.
