New crossings and improved road safety for residents, especially families walking to school, will be recommended at next week’s meeting of BCP Council’s Cabinet.
Just under £1.5 million has been awarded to the council as part of central government’s Consolidated Active Travel Fund (CATF).
It will pay for a range of measures including support for School Streets – temporary restrictions on motorised traffic and parking during school drop off and pick up times.
There will also be funding to develop potential improvements to streets around Christchurch Infants and Junior Schools.
Also recommended are:
- Major new pedestrian and cycle crossings on Highcliffe Road, between the Somerford and Hoburne roundabouts
- Improvements to walking and cycling route between Recreation Road and Coy Pond (where onward routes connecting all the way to Bournemouth Square have been built)
- A toucan crossing on Parkstone Road, Poole, which will connect Poole Park to Birds Hill Road.
Councillor Andy Hadley, Portfolio Holder for Climate Response, Environment and Energy at BCP Council, said: “This funding is another big step towards a healthier, safer and more sustainable future for our communities.
“I’m particularly pleased to see projects coming forward in Christchurch and Highcliffe that were requested to support walking, wheeling and cycling for all ages and abilities.
“Whether it’s safer school journeys or better links between neighbourhoods, these schemes will help people who are making more active travel choices every day.”
The Cabinet meeting is on Tuesday 13th May.
