The Great Dorset Beach Clean sweeps the coast with 130 bags of rubbish collected over seven days

Organisers have declared this year’s Great Dorset Beach Clean as a remarkable success.

Over the course of seven days, 297 volunteers cleaned 15 beaches and collected 130 bags of rubbish weighing around a third of a tonne.

The event was organised by Litter Free Dorset and involved 13 community groups, businesses, charities and organisations between April 5th and 13th.

They included Lyme Litter Pickers, Dorset Police Cadets, Yoga with Leah Miles, Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, Easy Riders, Water Babes UK, Swanage Beach Buddies, Clean Jurassic Coast, Sida Yoga, Dorset Goes Wild, Lulworth Rangers and the National Trust.

The rubbish collected ranged from school workbooks, a beach roll mat, and car tyres to socks, cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, glass bottles, cans and fishing gear.

Community support played a crucial role in the event with organisers thanking Baboo Gelato, which provided free hot drinks or ice cream to all volunteers cleaning up Lyme Regis beach, and Maciej Pacek from Bournemouth University for photographs.
