Councillors have raised concerns that Dorset’s tourism strategies are too focused on the coast, leaving inland towns overlooked.
At a recent meeting, Councillor Belinda Bawden said she felt sustainable tourism had not been properly included in current plans, and warned that visitors were choosing other regions like Cornwall and Devon because of their reputation for being environmentally friendly and welcoming.
Other councillors pointed out that towns such as Blandford, Shaftesbury and Gillingham received little mention in the Dorset Council visitor management plan.
Councillor David Northam noted that Weymouth was only highlighted for its beach, with no reference to its nature reserves, historic buildings or harbourside.
Councillor Piers Brown said there should be equal marketing for both the coast and countryside, suggesting Dorset could encourage visitors travelling to Cornwall to stop overnight in places like Sherborne or Shaftesbury.
He also highlighted the success of specialist events, such as Tankfest, in attracting large numbers of visitors.
Wimborne councillor Shane Bartlett expressed disappointment at not being involved in tourism planning for his area, despite promises of local member involvement.
