Thompson corner wins cup for the Cherries
Kenni Thompson’s early corner earned AFC Bournemouth a 1-0 win and cup glory on Saturday.
The Bermuda international settled the FA Women’s National League Cup final after just 7 minutes at MATRADE Loftus Road, with her goal proving enough to give the Cherries victory over Plymouth Argyle and complete a strong run through the competition.
Helen Bleazard’s side lifted the trophy without conceding once in 8 matches, and they delivered another “defensive masterclass” when it mattered most, controlling much of the first half and creating enough chances to have gone into the interval with a bigger lead.
Plymouth came back into the game after the break and asked more questions of Bournemouth’s backline, but the Cherries stayed organised throughout, with Katie Scadding keeping a deserved “clean sheet” and helping make sure Thompson’s set-piece strike remained the difference.
Jess Hennessy was named player of the match as Bournemouth completed a disciplined and memorable final win.
