BCP steps up Town of Culture 2028 race

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are moving ahead with a joint UK Town of Culture bid.

An expression of interest will be submitted by BCP Council before the 31 March deadline, putting the three towns into the running to become the UK’s first Town of Culture in 2028 and showing a shared case for national recognition.

The competition will shortlist three places later this year, with the winner receiving £3 million for a 2028 programme, while 2 runners up would get £250,000 and shortlisted towns would receive £60,000 to help develop a full bid later in 2026.

The proposal draws on the views and experience of arts venues, cultural organisations, grassroots groups and community partners, while presenting a cultural identity shaped by the coastline, natural environment and the idea that the three towns are stronger together.

Councillor Andy Martin said the bid is a chance to “open more doors”, “reach new audiences” and celebrate stories from across the area, adding that the more people who take part, the “stronger” and more representative the journey will be.
