Dorset flood service partnership considered
Plans for Dorset to join a regional flood and coastal protection partnership will be considered.
BCP Council’s Cabinet is due to discuss a proposal for Dorset Council to join the South West Flood and Coastal shared service when members meet on 26 March.
The service, hosted by BCP Council, brings together specialist teams to manage flooding and coastal erosion risks while sharing skills and resources across local authorities.
Councillor Andy Hadley said the model has already been working with East Devon and has helped attract government funding for flood and coastal schemes.
He added the shared service approach has also enabled councils to access specialist expertise that might otherwise have required external consultants.
Since September 2021, the BCP Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management team has supported several councils in the South West including New Forest, Dorset, East Devon, Exeter, North Somerset, Teignbridge and Torridge.
East Devon District Council joined the partnership in May 2024, which has since delivered coastal defence work in Seaton and longer term management plans for areas including Exmouth.
The proposal for Dorset Council to join the shared service was approved by Dorset Council’s Cabinet earlier this month.
