Funding secured for Pokesdown station lifts
Funding has been secured to install step free lifts at Pokesdown railway station.
More than £2.5million from the government will be used to improve access at the station by installing lifts serving both platforms.
The project will make use of existing disused lift shafts at the site, helping improve access for disabled passengers, families with prams and others who find stairs difficult.
Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026 with the work planned to be completed in 2027.
Councillor Millie Earl said the funding is good news for passengers travelling through Pokesdown and shows the government has listened to concerns raised locally.
She said the decision also means BCP Council taxpayers will not need to fund the improvements through borrowing.
Councillor Earl added that rail infrastructure is a national responsibility and said the improvements should be funded at government level rather than through local council budgets.
