Ferry staff face consultation over changes
Staff working on the Sandbanks Ferry are being consulted over possible redundancies.
The ferry company, which operates the route between Studland and Sandbanks, says changes to introduce cashless payments and automated toll systems could affect some toll related roles.
From 1 April 2026 the ferry will move to electronic payments only, with no cash accepted at toll booths.
Chair Mike Kean said the company is taking the business through a “digital transformation” to modernise systems and improve efficiency as part of plans to secure the long term future of the service.
He said new automated toll payment systems are expected to be introduced later in 2026, which could include number plate recognition technology.
The company currently employs around 40 permanent and seasonal workers and says toll booths will remain staffed during the transition period while the new systems are introduced.
Mike Kean said automated processes could lead to “a small number of redundancies for those in specific toll related roles”, adding the company has begun a formal consultation with staff.
South Dorset MP Lloyd Hatton said he has asked the ferry company for an update on the changes and their potential impact on local workers.
