BCP council tax rise above national cap
Council tax in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole will rise by 6.74% in the new financial year.
The increase was approved by councillors at a full council meeting on 24 February, with the proposal passing by 39 votes to 20 and 8 councillors abstaining.
Government rules normally allow local authorities to increase council tax by up to 4.99% each year without holding a referendum, but 7 councils across England have been given permission to go above that limit.
BCP Council is among those authorities, alongside Trafford, Warrington, Windsor and Maidenhead, North Somerset, Shropshire and Worcestershire.
Across England’s 153 top tier councils, most authorities set their council tax increase at the 4.99% cap, although 28 councils decided to raise it by a smaller amount.
BCP Council has previously said that just under £5million will be generated from the additional 1.5% increase above the cap.
The council says the extra funding will help support essential services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
