Poole physiotherapist to run London Marathon

A physiotherapist from Poole is running the London Marathon to support a children’s charity.

Caroline Palfrey, 22, suffered a rare spinal stroke when she was 8 years old that left her paralysed down her right side and required months of treatment and rehabilitation in Southampton General Hospital.

During her recovery she was supported by health play charity Starlight, which arranged a family day out and works to promote the role of play in helping children cope with serious illness and hospital treatment.

Caroline said the experience left a lasting impact on her and her family, explaining that the day organised by the charity is “something we still talk about” more than a decade later.

Inspired by the doctors, nurses and therapists who supported her recovery, she later trained as a physiotherapist and now works in the NHS.

She is hoping to raise £5000 for Starlight by taking part in the London Marathon this April, saying running the race is something she once thought she would never be able to do after her stroke.
