New Jekyll and Hyde stage show for Bournemouth

A new stage production will bring a fresh take on the classic story of Jekyll and Hyde.

Arts University Bournemouth Theatre Productions will stage the show at Palace Court Theatre in Bournemouth from 19 to 21 March, presenting a 2022 adaptation by Neil Bartlett that places women at the centre of the Victorian thriller.

The production introduces Dr Stevenson, a female physician investigating the mystery of Jekyll and Hyde while navigating the barriers faced by women working in professional roles during the Victorian era.

Director James Parker said the show combines physical theatre with ensemble performance, explaining that apart from Mr Hyde, women play the male characters to highlight “some of those traditional toxic male characteristics from the past”.

He also said the chorus plays an important role, creating the atmosphere of Victorian London and guiding how audiences experience each scene without drawing attention to themselves.

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde while living in Westbourne in the 1880s, drafting the story after reportedly being inspired by a vivid nightmare.

Final year acting students from Arts University Bournemouth take on the lead roles, with Claudia Costa playing Jekyll and Eve Harris portraying Dr Stevenson in this reinterpretation of the well known tale.
