Cherries managers share leadership at BU

AFC Bournemouth men’s and women’s managers shared leadership experiences during a Bournemouth University leadership event.

Students, staff and members of the public filled a lecture theatre on Talbot Campus as Andoni Iraola and Helen Bleazard discussed their journeys from playing careers into management and how leadership styles evolve with experience and new challenges.

The discussion formed the first Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Lecture organised by Bournemouth University where both managers spoke about adapting to new environments, supporting players on and off the pitch and learning from pressure situations in professional football.

Audience members were also invited to ask questions about leadership and decision making, with Iraola explaining the need to adapt to English football culture while Bleazard said she helps players balance football with other responsibilities.

Professor Alison Honour said the aim is to build “a culture of continuous leadership learning” for students, staff and visitors while AFC Bournemouth Commercial Director Rob Mitchell said the event allowed both managers to share insights from their careers.
