Government SEND reforms welcomed
BCP Council has welcomed proposed national reforms to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, following the Government’s publication of its white paper today.
The council said it has long called for meaningful changes to a system that has placed significant financial pressure on local authorities while not always delivering for children and families. It is now reviewing the proposals to assess the potential impact on services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
Councillor Richard Burton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education and Skills, said the council has been urging government to overhaul a SEND system that too often fails children and families and creates unsustainable costs for councils. He said the authority recognises the scale of the challenge and is pleased to see steps being taken.
He added that meaningful reform will depend on the detail of the proposals and the right level of long term funding. Councillor Burton said families deserve clarity and confidence about how the changes will work in practice, and confirmed the council will scrutinise the plans closely and work with local MPs on the next steps.
