Ferndown pupils explore music through drumming
Japanese Taiko drums and a traditional lion costume have helped pupils at Ferndown Middle School explore a fusion of music styles during special lessons.
The lion and Chinese drum equipment were loaned by Tony Sivyer from local group Dragon of the South, while the Taiko drums were provided by Dorset Music Service. Pupils learned drumming patterns, Chinese words and coordinated movements as part of the sessions.
Head of Music Scott Welcomme, who has worked in Hong Kong, said: “Having the costumes and drums allowed our pupils to combine culture with an awesome display of focus and discipline. What’s fantastic is that all pupils have been able to access the lessons whether playing the drums, cymbals or wearing the lion outfit.” He added that the experience had opened pupils’ eyes to something they may not otherwise have known about.
Ferndown Middle School is a Lead School for music as part of the Octagon Music Hub across Dorset and Somerset and holds the Music Mark award, recognising its commitment to inclusive music education. The school is part of Southern Education Trust.
