BCP launch town of culture bid
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council has launched a joint bid to become the first ever UK Town of Culture in 2028.
The council is bringing together the cultural strengths of all three towns in a first stage proposal for the new national competition, which will award £3 million to deliver a year long cultural programme, with two runners up receiving £250,000 each.
The bid will highlight the area’s existing cultural connections, from Bournemouth Emerging Arts Fringe and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to Poole Museum, the Russell Cotes Art Gallery and Museum and Highcliffe Castle. Arts by the Sea Festival and a wide range of grass roots community groups will also form part of the submission.
Councillor Andy Martin, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Communications and Customer, said: “The arts and culture play a vital role in supporting people’s health and wellbeing, helping us feel more connected, confident and able to thrive.
“Culture is the thread that links our three towns. This is an amazing opportunity to highlight the work we already do together, open doors for new audiences and make creativity easier for everyone to access.”
Shortlisted places will receive £60,000 to develop a full bid, with entries required to show strong community engagement and clear long term cultural plans.
