Commercial vehicle safety crackdown

Dorset Police

Roads policing officers have dealt with sixty four motorists during a two week commercial vehicle safety campaign across Dorset, including in Poole and Bournemouth.

Dorset Police joined a national initiative focusing on commercial vehicle safety, with officers from the Roads Policing Team and Commercial Vehicle Unit carrying out proactive checks and two targeted enforcement days alongside the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

Between Monday 26 January and Sunday 8 February 2026, drivers were dealt with for offences including having no insurance or valid MOT, insecure or overweight loads, excess speed, mobile phone use, dangerous vehicle conditions and breaches of drivers’ hours regulations.

Four arrests were made after drivers were reportedly found to be over the drug drive limit. Three vehicles were seized and five were prohibited from continuing their journeys. The Camera Safety Team also identified eighty one commercial vehicles travelling above the speed limit.

Police Sergeant Dave Cotterill said the work forms part of continuous efforts to keep roads safe and reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured, adding that most commercial drivers comply with the law. Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said the results show why road safety campaigns remain important and warned there is no excuse for behaviour that puts others at risk.
