Hair salons join romance fraud fight

Hair salons and barbers in Bournemouth and across Dorset are being invited to help Dorset Police raise awareness of romance fraud ahead of Valentine’s Day.

The force is asking businesses in the hair and beauty sector to create safe spaces where clients can speak openly about concerns and learn how to spot the warning signs of fraud.

Romance fraud happens when someone builds an emotional connection online to steal money or personal information. Police say the impact can be significant, leaving victims facing financial loss and emotional distress.

Participating salons and barbers will receive a training pack and materials to support sensitive conversations, help clients recognise suspicious behaviour and guide them towards appropriate support.

The campaign follows a successful trial at Toni and Guy salons in Bournemouth and Ringwood in 2025, as well as last year’s Big Night In campaign, which saw more victims report offences and access help.

Fraud Protect Officer Damian Cranny said criminals exploit online dating to manipulate emotions and steal money and personal details. He said using salons and barber shops as safe places to talk can help prevent further harm and ensure people feel supported to report concerns.

Dorset Police is advising people to be cautious about sharing personal information online, avoid sending money to someone they have not met in person and be wary of requests for gift cards or cryptocurrency.
