Children enjoy winter holiday activities and meals

Hundreds of children in Bournemouth and Dorset enjoyed a range of activities and meals during the winter holidays through the Winter in Dorset programme.

Part of the national Holiday Activities and Food scheme, the programme ran free and low‑cost sessions including sports camps, arts and crafts, Forest School adventures and Christmas family days. Families eligible for benefit‑related free school meals attended at no cost.

One highlight was a festive family day at Monkey World, attended by over three hundred people. Children made chocolate banana Santas, received more than two hundred new books from Dorset Library Services, and joined in sand art and creative activities. Sessions were also tailored to include children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Councillor Sutton, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said the programme was about more than activities, adding it supported families, healthy eating and positive holiday experiences. The initiative reflects Dorset Council’s focus on tackling holiday hunger and strengthening local communities.
