The Woman in Black returns to Poole

A chilling stage production is returning to Poole as The Woman in Black arrives for a five-night run.

The long-running stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel will be performed at Lighthouse Poole from Tuesday 17 February, bringing back the story of lawyer Arthur Kipps, who believes a sinister curse has followed him and his family after a disturbing encounter.

The plot sees Kipps hire a young actor to help retell his experiences in the hope of confronting his fears, using storytelling and performance to recreate events that gradually take hold of both men as the atmosphere deepens.

John Mackay takes on the role of Kipps, with Daniel Burke appearing as The Actor, in a production adapted by Stephen Mallatratt and directed by Robin Herford, who first brought the story to the stage in the late 1980s.

Director Robin Herford said the play has changed very little over time, adding that it uses “basic tools of light and darkness and sound and silence”, allowing the audience’s imagination to remain central to how tension and fear are created.
