A new exclusion notice scheme is being introduced across Bournemouth town centre, allowing repeat shoplifters to be banned from participating businesses.
The initiative has been developed by the Business Crime Reduction Partnership, working with Bournemouth Town Centre BID, Dorset Police and BCP Council, alongside a wide range of national and independent retailers and service providers based in the town centre.
The partnership has focused on identifying prolific offenders, agreeing clear action plans and improving information sharing around prosecutions, retail crime and anti social behaviour. These steps have led to the formal approval of exclusion notices as an additional enforcement tool.
The scheme will be managed by UKPAC, with BCP Council officers, town centre BID Rangers and trained security staff responsible for serving notices on individuals caught shoplifting.
Once issued, an exclusion notice will prevent an individual from entering any business displaying the Against Business Crime sticker for twelve months. Anyone who breaches the ban may face further enforcement action.
Stephen Manners of UKPAC said the scheme was about the business community standing together to improve safety for workers and visitors. Jackie Arnold, business crime liaison officer for Bournemouth Town Centre BID, said exclusion notices would act as a clear deterrent.
BCP Council’s head of public protection Sophie Sajic said the council was supporting businesses investing in Bournemouth by helping create safe and welcoming spaces through partnership working.
