Most main routes around Bournemouth were gridlocked for hours after flooding hit key roads on Wednesday.
Traffic was brought to a standstill across large parts of the town yesterday afternoon and evening after heavy rain led to floodwater covering carriageways, with Wessex Way affected between Cooper Dean and Blackwater and delays quickly spreading onto surrounding routes.
The A338, Castle Lane East and West, Parley Lane, Richmond Park, Christchurch Road and Boscombe Centre saw significant disruption, made worse by the closure of New Road and Ringwood Road towards Ferndown, leaving drivers searching for alternatives as queues continued to build.
One resident told Bournemouth One he left work near Littledown at 5pm and took more than an hour to reach Wessex Way, describing slow moving traffic and repeated standstills across the network.
Parts of Ferndown were also under water, and Dorset Councillor Jon Andrews responded to claims the council was to blame by saying it is natural to suspect blocked drains, but explained that even clear systems cannot cope with extreme volumes when rivers burst their banks.
BCP Council says it has been assisting local communities affected by flooding following Storm Chandra.
Some residents have also raised concerns about drivers ignoring road closed signs and driving through floodwater, with Linda, who lives on Ham Lane, saying this behaviour creates further problems and urging people to follow the highway code.
More rain is forecast for the rest of the week.
