Schools urged to review phone policies

Bournemouth Christchurch Poole Council is encouraging schools across the area to review their mobile phone policies to support student wellbeing, ahead of new government legislation.

The council says it is not introducing a single rule for all schools but wants existing policies to be checked to ensure they align with legislation being brought forward by the government. Almost all schools already have mobile phone rules in place, including nearly all primary schools and the majority of secondary schools.

In February two thousand and twenty five, the council approved a motion supporting the government’s Safer Phones Bill, which aims to ban phone use in schools, restrict social media access for under sixteens and give Ofcom powers to regulate app design.

Earlier this month, Dorset Council issued guidance encouraging schools to ban mobile phones and advising parents not to give smartphones to children under fourteen. A national consultation also began in January to identify next steps to improve children’s wellbeing online.

Councillor Richard Burton, cabinet member for children, young people, education and skills, said the council recognises the proactive steps schools are already taking and is encouraging reviews to further support wellbeing, safety and focus. He added that work is taking place with the Youth Parliament so young people can help shape a clear and consistent approach across the area.
