Amber rain warning issued

Residents and businesses in Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole are being warned to prepare for significant disruption as an amber weather warning for rain comes into force.

The Met Office says Storm Chandra is expected to bring persistent and heavy rain from late Monday afternoon through the night and into Tuesday morning. Rainfall totals of between thirty and fifty millimetres are forecast widely, with higher amounts possible on elevated ground. With the ground already saturated, this increases the risk of surface water flooding across the area.

Flooding of homes and businesses is likely in some locations, with fast flowing water posing a risk to life. Travel disruption is expected, including delays or cancellations to bus and train services, difficult driving conditions and the possibility of road closures. Some communities could become cut off if floodwater makes routes impassable, while power cuts and interruptions to other services are also possible.

A Met Office spokesperson said the rain is likely to cause flooding and disruption, particularly during Tuesday morning, and urged people to take sensible precautions. Residents are advised to avoid floodwater, consider postponing unnecessary journeys and check on vulnerable neighbours. People are also encouraged to stay up to date with local forecasts and follow advice from emergency services and the council.
