From homelessness to helping others in BCP

A former gambling addict who experienced homelessness is now supporting others through a Bournemouth charity.

James Cooper, thirty seven, told how addiction began in his teens and escalated through his early twenties, leaving him with serious debt, alcohol dependence and thoughts of suicide, before a crisis led him into rehabilitation and a turning point in his life.

After completing rehab in September 2019, James was homeless and was offered accommodation and support by Hope housing in Bournemouth, where he accessed recovery meetings, counselling and education, describing the support as the moment his life began to change.

He went on to complete English and maths qualifications, developed a strong interest in wellbeing and exercise, and later studied sports and exercise psychology at university, using physical activity as part of his recovery and rebuilding confidence away from harmful environments.

James later returned to Hope, the charity that supported him, and now works as a support worker helping people affected by homelessness, addiction, abuse and trauma, using his own experiences to build trust and encourage positive change.

He said the role gives him purpose and urged anyone worried about gambling to seek help early, adding that support is available locally across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
