Property owners urged to check buildings

Property owners next to public highways are being urged to check buildings to reduce risks.

Regular checks and timely maintenance are being highlighted after falling debris from unsafe structures led to road and pavement closures, disrupting daily journeys and underlining how quickly preventable issues can affect people living, working and travelling through nearby communities.

Dorset Council says when a dangerous structure is reported, on call Building Control Surveyors and Highways Engineers attend to work with owners to make areas safe, while stressing that responsibility for repairs, and any associated costs, remains firmly with the property owner.

Councillor Jon Andrews, Cabinet Member for Place Services, said the council has a duty to keep people using roads and pavements safe, adding that closures are unavoidable when debris falls, but disruption “could be avoided if proper maintenance is carried out”.

The council says enforcement action can be taken if repairs are not completed promptly, and owners are encouraged to act early to prevent incidents, reduce disruption and avoid the need for urgent safety measures being put in place.
