Water meters could cut bills for homes

Bournemouth Water is advising households to consider water meters as a practical way to track usage, reduce waste and potentially lower bills.

The company says meters record the exact amount of water used in a property, meaning customers are billed on consumption rather than an estimated charge, which can give households clearer control and help them make informed changes to daily habits.

Bournemouth Water reports that most customers who move to a metered supply see their bills reduce over time, often after becoming more aware of how water is used and identifying opportunities to cut back without affecting everyday routines.

Meters can also help highlight hidden leaks, as any water passing into a property is measured, making it easier to spot unexpected use when no taps or appliances are running.

Customers are protected by a Lowest Bill Guarantee, allowing them to return to unmetered charges within two years if a meter does not reduce their bill, while free installation and advice are available for those who qualify.

Customer Project Manager John King said water meters give people “reassurance” and help households stay in control at a time when budgets are under pressure.
