Bournemouth gets writing bug again

Writers will once again gather across Bournemouth when the Writing Festival returns for its fourth year.

The event will bring three days of talks, workshops and creative activity to venues around the town.

Running from 24 to 26 April, the festival will host more than 100 free and ticketed events at locations including Pavilion Dance, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Patch, Palace Court Theatre, Horseshoe Common and Bournemouth beach, with sessions designed for all ages and levels of experience.

Much of the programme is free to attend, supported by Arts Council funding and ticket income, with new features this year including a Poetry Marquee at Horseshoe Common offering drop-in activities and live performances throughout the weekend.

Other highlights include Writing on the Beach, beginner and dementia-friendly sessions at Russell-Cotes, children’s activities at Patch, and the Writers’ Hive, which provides free entry to talks, panel discussions and four book launches.

Two new masterclasses are also being introduced, both held at the Russell-Cotes conservatory, with sessions led by literary agent Saskia Leach and Dorset-based author Rachel McLean focusing on submissions and commercial fiction.

Festival Director Dominic Wong said the aim is to make writing feel welcoming and achievable, whether people are starting out or looking to take the next step, with a programme designed to bring writers together from across the community and beyond.
