Free first books for BCP’s young readers

Babies and toddlers across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole can now get their first library card, a free book and goodies.

BCP Libraries’ offer is part of the national Go All In campaign, branding for the National Year of Reading this year, created by the National Literacy Trust and the Department for Education to tackle declining enjoyment in reading by promoting the appeal and immediate pleasure of stories.

Alongside the free books, BCP is planning a Library Legends challenge, inviting families to complete reading quests, collect character cards and stickers, and work towards a medal while making library visits a shared and engaging experience for young readers and their carers.

Councillor Andy Martin, the portfolio holder for libraries, said that as this year marks the National Year of Reading, he wants more of the youngest residents to join BCP Libraries, adding, “Parents and carers who register their baby or toddler for a library card will receive a complimentary book, while stocks last.”

He encouraged families to visit their local branch to explore resources, activities and events that support early literacy and long-term reading habits, and confirmed that residents can join the initiative by going into any BCP library to sign up.
