Potholes prompt amber alert for BCP roads
BCP Council has been rated amber for its highways performance, putting pressure on the authority to speed up road repairs across Bournemouth and the wider area.
The rating comes under a new Government traffic light system designed to give residents clearer information about how well councils maintain local roads and where improvement is needed.
Last year, the council received an extra £1,926,000 from the Government to tackle potholes and has already filled more than 2,500, but Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes said the current assessment shows more needs to be done.
He said that while progress had been made with Government support, an amber rating meant the council needed to move faster to ensure roads were smooth and reliable for local people.
The council will also receive guaranteed transport funding each year, with allocations set to rise steadily towards the end of the decade, giving longer term certainty for planning and maintenance.
Nationally, the Government says it has doubled the annual roads budget and committed £7.3 billion in multi year funding, alongside a pledge to fix an extra one million potholes a year by the end of this Parliament.
