Record seizures of illegal e-bikes

Almost one hundred illegal e-bikes and more than one hundred and thirty illegal e-scooters have been seized this year as police step up action against anti social behaviour across the conurbation.

A total of ninety nine e-bikes, including scramblers and sur-rons, and one hundred and twenty eight e-scooters were taken off the streets under road safety legislation, marking the highest level of seizures recorded by the Force.

The results follow targeted work in Poole and north Bournemouth, where officers introduced SmartTag forensic spray earlier this year after reports of repeated anti social behaviour involving electric vehicles in public spaces.

The spray leaves a unique forensic code on riders, helping improve evidence gathering and supporting prosecutions, with plans in place to extend its use into other areas of the conurbation and wider Dorset.

Police are also sharing findings with seven other forces and Bournemouth University as part of an evidence led study, while offence data is being shared with local partners to strengthen intelligence and inform future responses.

Inspector Nick Lee said the illegal use of these vehicles puts pedestrians and other road users at risk and warned that vehicles used unlawfully will be seized and destroyed.

Residents are being reminded to check the law before buying electric vehicles and to report suspected illegal use so concerns in local communities can be addressed.
