New names revealed for council gritters
Work has begun to apply new names to a fleet of gritters operating across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, following a public naming exercise.
More than one thousand suggestions were submitted by residents, prompting a detailed selection process that balanced creativity with suitability for use on vehicles working on public roads throughout the conurbation during winter weather.
The final list includes Sir David Attenbrrr, Gritty Gritty Bang Bang, Auntie Freeze, Glacier Cherries, Slip Not, Poole-ar Express, Boscombe Bobsleigh, Chr-ice-church, True Grit, Old Harry Rock Salt, Ice Ice Maybe, David Plowie and Grit Expectations, with each name reflecting local places, humour or well-known references.
Council officers say the response showed strong public interest in the service and provided an opportunity to involve communities in a light-hearted way, while keeping the focus on the essential role gritters play in keeping roads safer during icy conditions.
Sir David Attenbrrr has already entered service with its new markings, and the remaining vehicles are expected to follow as the branding work is completed, ready for deployment during periods of cold weather in the coming weeks and into the new year.
