Plans out for Wimborne’s year of culture

A year-long programme of events has been announced to celebrate Wimborne being named Dorset’s Town of Culture for next year.

Plans include a new youth-led arts festival, a digital culture guide, a sculpture trail linked to the River Allen, and a new culture fund offering small grants to artists, schools and community groups to deliver their own projects during the year.

The programme is being led by Wimborne Minster Town Council, with support from The Arts Development Company and Dorset Council, marking a coordinated investment in local arts, culture and participation.

An appointed producer and project manager, Emma Kerr, said the theme Bridging the Past and the Future aims to reflect Wimborne’s long history while encouraging new forms of creativity and involvement across different age groups and communities.

She said the programme is about connection and ensuring culture reaches people who may not usually take part, including those living on the edges of the town and residents who feel isolated.

Wimborne follows Bridport as Town of Culture last year and Weymouth and Portland this year, as part of a wider Dorset initiative inspired by European cultural programmes and focused on community participation.

Town Mayor Jeff Hart said the year offers an opportunity to celebrate local heritage and talent while creating long-term benefits for residents, organisations and visitors.
