Faster train Wi-Fi trial links Dorset
Passengers between London Waterloo and Dorset can now stay online through the New Forest thanks to a new train Wi-Fi trial.
Stronger and more reliable onboard internet is now available on services serving Dorset after South Western Railway began a one year trial using satellite technology to tackle one of the route’s longest standing signal blackspots, where passengers have previously gone without connectivity for more than twenty minutes.
Early testing on a Class four four four train operating between London Waterloo, Portsmouth Harbour and Weymouth shows coverage has reached ninety seven per cent through the New Forest, allowing passengers travelling to and from Dorset to browse, stream and keep in touch more consistently during busy festive journeys.
The trial forms part of wider work through Project Reach, a national partnership designed to improve mobile and data coverage on key rail routes, with new infrastructure expected to begin installation next year and complete by twenty twenty eight.
Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said a reliable Wi Fi signal can transform a journey, adding that the trial shows how public ownership can deliver practical improvements that put passengers first.
