Local poll on junk food ads near schools

A local poll has been launched in Mid Dorset and North Poole as the area’s MP presses for councils to gain stronger powers over junk food advertising near schools.

Vikki Slade has renewed calls after the Devolution Bill returned to the House of Commons, where she worked on proposals during detailed committee scrutiny.

As a member of the Bill Committee, she worked with the Jamie Oliver Group and the Obesity Health Alliance on a clause affecting private billboards.

The proposal sought to allow councils to regulate advertising near schools, youth clubs, parks and other places where children and young people spend time.

Although the clause received cross party support, it was not selected for a vote when the Bill returned to the Commons.

Slade said the measure was intended to protect children’s health, adding, “Councils should be able to decide what is appropriate near schools and young people.”

She pointed to evidence showing higher obesity rates in deprived areas, with figures from 2022/23 highlighting a marked gap between the least and most deprived communities.

The MP confirmed discussions are under way for further consideration in the House of Lords, while residents are invited to take part in the local poll.
