New cliff top shelter opens in Poole
A new shelter has opened on the Canford Cliffs clifftop in Poole following a campaign by residents to replace an older structure that had become rotten.
Local people had raised concerns about the condition of several cliff top shelters, saying the bases had deteriorated and needed replacing for safety and continued use.
The replacement shelter has been built using locally sourced oak and funded through the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy, following sustained community support for the project.
The shelter is used regularly by dog walkers, local residents and volunteers who help maintain Pinecliff Garden, also known locally as the Sunken Garden. Residents are now hoping to find an artist willing to create a mural on the rear of the shelter, adding a further community feature to the site.
Seascape, which built the shelter, said it is expected to last well beyond forty years and the team enjoyed delivering the project for the area.
Andrea Charman from the Branksome Park and Canford Cliffs Residents Association said resident pressure was key, adding there was strong interest in seeing the shelter repaired.
Canford Cliffs Ward Councillor Gavin Wright said the project showed what could be achieved when community groups, councillors, council officers and craftsmen worked together.
