Poole bridge to mark brain injury day

Twin Sails Bridge in Poole will be illuminated in blue and pink this Friday to honour brain injury survivors across the UK and support the work of Headway UK.

The colours will appear from dusk to dawn on 12 December as BCP Council helps mark the charity’s national awareness day.

The gesture reflects the scale of brain injury in the UK, with someone admitted to hospital every ninety seconds from incidents ranging from falls and collisions to medical conditions such as stroke, aneurysm, meningitis and encephalitis.

Headway UK provides support for survivors, families, carers and professionals through a nurse-led helpline, specialist training, a wide information library and its Brain Injury ID Card scheme, which helps people communicate their needs in public.

The date also coincides with the charity’s Annual Awards, where survivors, carers, volunteers and professionals will be recognised across five categories for their achievements.

Colin Morris, Director of Communications at Headway UK, said the illumination is a welcome show of support and helps highlight injuries that can be hidden but life-changing.

He added that linking the bridge lighting with the awards offered a timely way to raise awareness and celebrate people affected by brain injury.
