BCP gains national boost for travel work

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole will see their active travel funding more than double after the area was recognised nationally for its delivery of safer walking and cycling routes.

The council has been awarded a level three rating by Active Travel England, placing it among only a few local authorities to reach this standard.

The yearly allocation will rise from £1.45 million in 2025/26 to £2.95 million for 26/27 and future years. This follows recent work supported by Active Travel England, including School Streets, new pedestrian crossings and improved paths at Whitecliff in Poole, alongside wider Transforming Travel upgrades.

Councillor Andy Hadley said the higher rating shows clear progress in providing safer, sustainable travel choices for residents and reflects strong local leadership. He said these improvements help children, older people, bus users and motorists by reducing overall traffic levels.

The additional funding will support further upgrades across the network, delivered alongside resurfacing projects, pothole repairs and bus fare initiatives. The rating increase comes as the council continues to develop its long-term Local Transport Plan, which aims to shape inclusive and accessible travel across BCP and Dorset through to 2041.
