Local MP urges action on athlete funding

A Dorset athlete’s Olympic selection has led to renewed calls for action on sports funding after local MP Vikki Slade said financial pressures were putting young talent at risk.

Jacques Jefferies, whose grandmother lives in Mid Dorset and North Poole, will represent Team GB at the Winter Olympics in February. He has reached the highest level of his sport but is covering his own costs through a fundraising page.

Speaking in Parliament, Vikki Slade asked why an athlete selected for Team GB was left to fund his participation, saying it was “frustrating” that this had become necessary.

She has arranged a meeting with a Minister in January to discuss long-term support for athletes, following reports that many are considering leaving their sport before the Los Angeles Olympics because of financial strain.

She said the system risks losing future medal contenders if young people cannot afford to compete, adding that while communities will always support local athletes, this “cannot replace proper investment”.

The MP has urged Ministers to make time for a debate on athlete funding to help keep British sport competitive.
