Funding to improve BCP cliff safety work
Essential work to improve cliff safety across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is set to move forward after councillors supported allocating £1.4 million for stability management. The funding aims to lower the risk of landslips and keep seafront routes safe for public use.
The area contains around fifteen and a half miles of cliffs and chines, most of which are managed locally. The money will support a rolling programme of inspecting, maintaining and replacing more than seven hundred sand drains and drainage systems.
Further assessments will take place at locations including West Cliff, Honeycombe Chine and Pinecliff Gardens so areas of concern can be made safe. Improving drainage at sites such as Tofts, Fisherman’s Walk, Manor Steps, East Cliff and Highcliffe is also expected to reduce ongoing risks at a relatively low cost.
Councillor Andy Hadley said the cliffs require ongoing management to protect people and infrastructure. He added that the planned work will help support a long-term approach to caring for the coastline and retaining access points and pathways.
The proposal follows recent slips at West Cliff and East Cliff and forms part of wider seafront investment across the area.
